Weekly Wrap Up

Monday, January 12, 2015

First week of school is over (even though it started on a Wednesday), nevertheless my first last day of my undergrad semester has gone and passed. Now to just kick butt for the rest of the year, which is easier said than done. I have been getting some reading done but nothing that has led me to writing a review about it. And not because the books I've picked up are bad, on the contrary they're really good, but because they're part of a big series. With that being said, let me just say that I may have found a new favorite author- Patricia Briggs. Man, her books are awesome!

I started and finished the first and second books in the Alpha & Omega series (Cry Wolf and Hunting Ground)- which I highly recommend. SO GOOD. This urban fantasy series centers around werewolves, specifically Anna and Charles. Anna is a special kind of werewolf called an Omega whose job in a pack is to be neither dominant nor submissive, but be a force of ease and comfort. Taking from Hunting Ground, it means "strong enough to do exactly what it had to in order to triumph, whether that meant cringing in the presence of dominant wolves or tearing her enemy apart." Good stuff I know. You really get more of a sense of what an Omega is when you read the books. Charles on the other hand is a dominant wolf, son to the reigning "king" of the entire North American werewolves called the Marrok. His entire life he has been his father's hit-man, establishing control and stability among packs or wolves who get out of line. The first time Charles sees Anna, his inner wolf instantly mates with hers and Anna is from there on connected to Charles. This series has romance, and I love Anna and Charles, but it also has a lot of action and really interesting mythical creatures! It's amazing to read how Patricia Briggs sets up this world and how all these different characters interact with one another. I'm just waiting to get my hands on the third book in the series, Fair Game, so hopefully I'll be able to check it out soon!

Once I finished the first two books in the Alpha & Omega series I knew I had to delve into another Patricia Brigg book. So, naturally I chose Moon Called, the first book in the Mercy Thompson series. I'm not that far into this book (I haven't had time to really get in there) but so far what I've read I likey. This series still deals with werewolves but interestingly enough the protagonist, Mercy, is not a wolf but a coyote. Score. I'm just branching out with all these animals.

Besides these Patricia Briggs I also began a little but of Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews, book one of the Kate Daniels series. This one I have barely scratched at the surface, but right off the bat I can tell you it's very detailed in its world-building and characters- intensely so. Which I really like, but is taking me a while to really get into the story line. Also, I just noticed Patricia Briggs note about Magic Bites- it's a sign to keep on reading!

Let me know if you've read any of these books and if you're as obsessed as I've become with Patricia Briggs! Happy Monday!
